A Time-Geographic Approach to Wildlife-Road Interactions

چکیده
Addressing the effects of roadway presence on wildlife movement is a growing concern in both conservation and transportation planning (Corlatti et al. 2009, Fahrig and Rytwinski 2009). One common effect of road presence is the collision between vehicles and animals resulting in direct mortality if an animal attempts to cross the road (Clevenger et al. 2003, Orlowski G and Nowak L 2006). This problem may then be contextualized as an issue of animal mobility including treatment of wildlife movement across roads as a time-geographic problem in GIScience. Developed in the time geography literature, space-time prisms can be used to map potential spatial locations for objects over time given known spatial, temporal, and physical constraints limiting their movements (Hägerstrand 1970, Miller 2005, Winter and Yin, 2010). In research developed by Downs et al. (2013) a voxel based geocomputational approach was used to generate probabilistic space-time prisms, capable of determining the most probable set of entity locations in a space-time trajectory. These prisms can be used to quantify animal locations based on their location probability within a specific space at a given time. This paper extends probabilistic space time prisms to quantify interaction probabilities for wildlife with consideration of roadway influences, at the individual animal level. Specifically, voxel-based probabilistic space-time prisms are used quantify interaction probabilities for moving objects that come in contact with stationary objects.

A time geographic approach for delineating areas of sustained wildlife use
1 Geographic information systems (GIS) are widely used for mapping wildlife movement 2 patterns, and observed wildlife locations are surrogates for inferring on wildlife 3 movement and habitat selection. We present a new approach to mapping areas where 4 wildlife exhibit sustained use, which we term slow movement areas (SMAs). Nested 5 within the habitat selection concepts of home range and cor...

BACKGROUND The study of inter-individual interactions (often termed spatial-temporal interactions, or dynamic interactions) from remote tracking data has focused primarily on identifying the presence of such interactions. New datasets and methods offer opportunity to answer more nuanced questions, such as where on the landscape interactions occur. In this paper, we provide a new approach for ma...

Development of roads through protected areas and ecological sensitive regions can have catastrophic effects on wildlife. In Iran, road construction in sensitive habitats and protected areas has been expanding during the past decades. This study focuses on the ecological impacts of Isfahan’s west ringway, which passes through Ghamishloo wildlife refuge, I.U.C.N category IV, in Isfahan Province. ...
متن کاملOptimal Stochastic Control in Continuous Time with Wiener Processes: General Results and Applications to Optimal Wildlife Management
We present a stochastic optimal control approach to wildlife management. The objective value is the present value of hunting and meat, reduced by the present value of the costs of plant damages and traffic accidents caused by the wildlife population. First, general optimal control functions and value functions are derived. Then, numerically specified optimal control functions and value func...
متن کاملBALANCING THE CONSERVATION OF WILDLIFE HABITAT WITH ROAD ACCESS FOR SUBSISTENCE HUNTING IN YAKUTAT, ALASKA By
This thesis was an interdisciplinary investigation with the goal of balancing the conservation of wildlife habitat with road access for subsistence hunting in Yakutat, Alaska. The problem posed by land managers and subsistence moose hunters revolved around the use of offhighway vehicles (OHVs; e.g. “four-wheelers”) for subsistence moose hunting and the potential disturbance OHVs have on moose. ...
